Waco Homeowner’s Pool / Wins design award.
Galveston, TX — A Waco swimming pool won a prestigious award for technical and engineering achievement at the 2009 Association of Pool & Spa Professionals’ Regional Design Awards ceremony in Galveston. A total of 74 awards in 25 categories were presented at the February 27 event at the Galveston Convention Center. The event recognizes superior design and craftsmanship in pools and pool builders throughout the south-central United States. The pool was built by Ocean Quest Pools By Lew Akins, one of over 2000 pool builders in the eight-state region. Lew Akins accepted this and two other design awards at the event.
With a lifetime total of more than 184 awards, Akins is no stranger to “taking home the gold.” Widely recognized as an industry pioneer in the development and refinement of “Vanishing Edge” pool designs, Akins also popularized the “Natural Pool” design in Central Texas in the 1980’s. “People said we were crazy when we started building boulders and natural waterfalls into the swimming pools,” said Akins. “Now, more than half of all the pools we build are some form of natural, freeform lagoon.

About the APSP Region 3 Design Awards & Judging Process
The APSP Region 3 Design Awards recognizes and rewards installations of pools and hot tubs which showcase the most beautiful and creative work in our region. More info at www.apspregion3.org/APSP03/1002/286/inside.aspx The judging panel is made up of certified builder and certified service professionals across the United States. Judges do not know the names of entrants, as all entries are identified only by number. Judges look for quality/durability of construction, and how well the shape and style of the installation blends with the surrounding area and architecture. They focus on the aesthetic features of the installation, including landscaping and/or other amenities that enhance the harmony created. Photographically observable factors such as workmanship, soundness of design and safety measures required by existing standards, are also considered. Any entry which does not include the entrant’s affirmation of conformance with applicable ANSI/APSP standards or any applicable mandatory design code of a government having jurisdiction over the installation site, cannot be considered in the judging. At the judges’ discretion, any number of medal awards (Gold Medal, Silver Medal, Bronze Medal), and/or any number of Awards of Merit may be presented in each category of entry. However, judges do not have to recognize any entries in a category if they deem that no entries merit an award.
